When I was a little girl, I learned all the words to popular love songs. When I played, my dolls acted out tragic love affairs with the current heartthrob on TV or in the movies. I thought everyone made up romantic stories in their heads to fall asleep at night.
Even then, I loved the romance in the books I read, enjoying Nancy Drew's relationship with Ned more than her mystery-solving. And I will never forgive Louisa May Alcott for not giving Jo a happy ending with Laurie! When I discovered romance novels in college, I was in heaven – especially when the story was set in historic England. I even majored in English Literature at college so I could read my way to a degree, reading Jane Austen, of course, but also Henry James, and D.H. Lawrence, among others.
In my first career I helped others craft their own happy endings – after earning my masters degrees in Psychology and Social Work I became a county mental health therapist. My dream job, though, had always been to write romance novels and since the day I first summoned the courage to pursue that dream, I have never looked back. I am thrilled that my Harlequin Historical books have gone on to win some of Romance's highest honours, including the RITA Award, the National Readers Choice Award, and the Holt Medallion Award of Merit.
I have reaped a world of friendships through my romance writing – a priceless bonus to living my dream. Alongside writing, I enjoy e-mailing with my friends and travelling to England for research. These days I live in Virginia with my husband and our three very ordinary house cats.
