BLACK ROBERT. THE MOST FEARED OF ALL KING EDWARD’S MEN…

When an English knight approaches the charred ruins of her sister’s Scottish village, Gaira of Clan Colquhoun knows better than to trust this fierce-looking man. Yet, struggling to set her war-shaken world to rights, she has little choice. Robert of Dent will see her to safety. He can promise nothing more. Never again will he make a vow like the one he broke years ago, even though Gaira’s fierce resilience makes him long to protect her. But what will happen when Gaira discovers exactly who Robert is… ?

In the time of King Edward ....

Rating By Julia,18/03/2015

It is not clear if this is part of a series. The story is set the time of King Edward. He is making a push to control the highlands. Gaira of Clan Colquhoun was escaping from her betrothed on one of his horses. She is heading for the protection of her sister and her family at Doonhill. When she reaches Doonhill however, the village has been burned and everyone in it killed or so she thought. A few children survived. Taking care of the children and using the night to bury the dead Gaira makes camp up the hill and tries her best to take care of everything. Hugh a friend of Robert of Dent informs him of the burning of Doonhill. Robert goes to look for himself and cannot comprehend why someone would sanction this. Children and Adults laid side by side. In searching the village Robert hears movement and knowing that the person may be scared he tries to call out. When he hears no reply he draws his sword and goes into the hut. That is when he comes in contact with a cauldron. Gaira was determined to defend herself and the children but Robert makes her uncomfortable. He is English but talks as a scot. She ties him up and removes the sword and other weapons. Taking him to her camp she finds someone who can help bury the dead. Robert agrees. Gaira then starts to depend on him and asks him to help with their journey. Robert is reluctant but agrees to take them to the nearest town. Their journey becomes more involved and Robert decides to take her back to her brothers. Lots of different events happen during the journey including weather problems, children problems and Gaira’s intended turns up too. Robert finds out a few things about Gaira that makes him less trusting with her but they grow closer, the closer Gaira gets home. Hugh goes out to find Robert and follows his trail. Hugh and Robert meet up just in time to have a battle with Gaira’s younger brothers, Caid and Malcolm. They all return to Gaira’s home and her older brother Bram who is Laird takes Hugh and Robert into custody. Bram and Robert fight nearer the end of the book but it is a weird fight. All works out well in the end for everyone. It would be wonderful if the author continues with Clan Colquhoun giving both Bram, Caid and Malcolm their own stories too. The ending was short and sweet but I would have liked a little more.
