IN A CITY OF SHADOWS…

Orlando Landucci knows all too well what darkness lies beneath Florence’s dazzling splendour. And when his beloved sister is torn from him he will stop at nothing to avenge her death.

… ONLY A KISS CAN LIGHT UP THE DARKNESS

But from the moment he lays eyes on innocent Isabella Spinola something inside him shifts. She is the kin of his sworn enemy, yet he feels compelled to protect her. With every forbidden kiss Orlando’s sense of betrayal deepens – so when the time for vengeance comes will their bond be enough to banish the shadows for ever?

This story has very sad undertones to it.

Based in Florence for the most part, the author did an excellent job in setting the scenes for her characters, who were in themselves wonderful too. Orlando carries sadness and a heavy weight from his past. He is not a very complex character as the author explains his sadness early on. He emerges and vanishes very quickly within the story which certainly added to his mystery. He has one task to perform and he lives for that task so when he comes across Isabella it shocks him in his distraction and feelings. Isabella comes from the country but has relatives in Florence, who are amongst the elite and powerful of the city. Her mother was sister to the father of the two who reside in Florence. Isabella lives a life around her father and her art. She loves to draw and paint more than anything. Her father loves his books and study since the death of his wife. All is well until they get a letter from Caterina a cousin from the Strozzi family. Caterina is ill and asks Isabella’s father to send her as a companion. As with everything in Florence this simple request was not so simple. Caterina and her brother Matteo talk of finding Isabella a husband, something she is not so keen on. On her way to the Strozzi palazzo she is distracted and gets lost. Men attack her and that is when Orlando and Isabella meet. He saves her. During the story he looks after her a great deal, although there are problems in his getting closer and feeling more for Isabella. There is a lot of colour from other character including the real ones of the Pazzi, Lorenzo and Giuliano de Medici and the artist Botticelli but the author never looses her way with these other characters, they just add to the story. Everything comes to a head when they go to the mass for lent. All Florence erupts and the author does well not to get lost in the true events that happen during the story. Characters and events that really did occur in history add colour and a bit of gore to the story. Things get worse for Orlando and Isabella and the Strozzi family making them all part. However in the end all turns out well for both characters. The ending was sweet and really gave the story a lasting beauty to it. The author gives us some wonderful information in the Author’s note and some of her reference books noted, in case any of her readers wanted to go further into this world of Florence. This information also tells us where the spark of the story and characters came from which was wonderful to read. The author also tells us that Caterina will get her story too which I hope will include news of Orlando, Isabella, Maria and Isabella’s father.
