"There is no one. I travel alone. I live alone. Always."

Battle-scarred Thrand the Destroyer has only one thing on his mind: settling old scores. But with the beautiful Lady of Lingfold as his prisoner, the unyielding warrior starts to dream of a loving wife and a home to call his own.

Cwen is also seeking justice, but she knows the fragile alliance she’s built with Thrand will only last as long as they share a common enemy. Unless they can find a way to leave revenge to the gods to forge a new life together.

A mavellous saga

A fantastic Viking tale set in Northumbria. It has some great characters. Some sad aspects to the story and some just desserts handed out. Thrand Ammundson is definitely a Viking through and through. He has suffered in his past and now fights for gold and for his King Halfdan. His reputation proceeds him but as the story progresses you will find that all is not as it would appear and that some reputations are not always earned. His character is strong and pig headed at the beginning being the typical Viking commander. As events migrate through the story, you find that his character perhaps is not how you would assume it to be, for one as mercenary as he appears. He develops well as a character throughout the situations within the story and you find yourself liking him more and more. Lady Cwenneth of Lingwold has been bartered into her second marriage she is not keen on but that is not the worst of the story. Cwenneth learns much during her journeys that makes her look at life in a different way. Said to be cursed she has lost much in her short past but she learns that she can do more than she thinks and Cwenneth finds she is stronger than she had known. The tale brings them together with a tragic event which pulls at the souls of both characters. Thrand is on this way to keep a promise to a friend but like all promises they are harder to keep when you get to your destination and discover what is before you. He runs across Cwenneth and finds she is being untrue about her identity which causes mistrust to begin within their relationship. Events take a turn for the worst and Cwenneth fears she truly is cursed. The Norse men feel she is good luck after Thrand sees a boar cross her path. They soon find they are just two people who have a need for each other. Add to the mix Hagal the Red who wants both of them, two children and Cwenneth’s family who have been told that she has been kidnapped and you have a stirring Viking and Northumbrian tale that is a joy to read. The author developed all the characters well and the ending was a pure joy of a gem as you revisit Thrand and Cwenneth one year on. I would not like to elaborate as it would spoil the ending but they both end the book with a priceless gift.
