The Masquerade Club
Identities concealed, desires revealed…

A Wonderful addition

Rating By Julia,04/08/2014

I have enjoyed all the stories of the Masquerade Club and found this one did not disappoint. It was a little more serious then the other stories but Hugh and Daphne have both had to deal with life on everyone else's terms all their lives. It was good to see that Daphne, Lady Faville could change from her previous appearence, which the author dealt very well with. The 2 years gap was explained very well. It was not dwelled on like some tend to do with the character's past. The references to the past and the abbess were really well handled. The coming together of Hugh and Daphne was during an incident which was in parallel to a similar event that saw Daphne repairing aboard. The fire manages to injure Hugh who had previously saved many occupants of the inn including Daphne and her maid Monette. Hugh is then cared for by Daphne but unaware she is Lady Faville who nearly ruined his family by damaging the club. They become close but there is great care in the writing allowing you to experience other characters within their sphere. When they meet again Hugh knows who she is and there is friction overcomed by desire. It is sweet to have another love story in Monette and Toller also within these circumstances. We get to catch up with Hugh's family and with the club. Of course the road isn't smooth and many things try to pull them apart. I loved the ending but was left wanting more. Perhaps the story can continue with Monette and Toller and it would be wonderful if Cummings and McEvoy could find love too as they are sweet characters. It would be wonderful to visit the club again.

A well written novel with plenty of action. However Daphne the heroine had been a character of disrepute in a previous novel by Mrs Gaston and having already read this it coloured my view of her - I couldn't really swallow the redemption angle and the endearing Hugh deserved so much better. If you haven't read the previous novel then you would enjoy this. Six out of ten
