Seducing His Shy Cinderella

Written by Michelle Smart

Chapter Four

Jodie closed her eyes and swallowed back the nausea. She’d tried so hard not to think of the woman who’d been glued to Antonio’s side that evening. The only saving grace had been that they hadn’t been overly affectionate with each other. If she saw them kiss or display too much – any – tenderness, she feared she wouldn’t be able to hold the nausea back any longer.

Stop thinking about him. Your instincts to flee his bed have been proven right. Three more hours and you’ll be free of him.

Smoothing her plaited hair, she took a deep breath and left her brief refuge.

“Feeling better?”

Antonio was leaning against the wall of the corridor, arms folded loosely across his chest. Despite the relaxed stance he’d adopted, his eyes contained not an ounce of friendliness. The intensity in his dark gaze, which landed on her the moment she put her foot out of the door, frightened her, although she could never have explained why. Maybe it was because she’d only ever seen amusement or desire being reflected at her before…

Frantically attempting to keep hold of the composure she’d only just regained, Jodie swallowed and looked away. But her heart had a mind of its own and thudded heavily beneath her ribs. “Yes. Thank you. And thank you for taking the blame with Pieta. You didn’t have to do that.”

He raised a hefty shoulder nonchalantly. “I figured it was my fault you dropped it.”

She shook her head quickly, not wanting him to think he affected her to such an extent. What was he even doing there, seeking her out? Having some fun at her expense? Hoping to talk her into keeping her mouth shut about their night together?

She couldn’t begin to imagine, but the fact he’d brought a date with him put aside any latent hope – so latent she’d not even allowed herself to acknowledge its existence – that what they’d shared had been as special for him as it had been for her.

So she attempted a smile, which she was sure turned into something more like a grimace and blithely said, “A momentary blip of clumsiness.”

The faint trace of a smile curved his sensual lips. Straightening, he took a step towards her. A swirl of his expensive cologne filtered through her senses.

She’d never known anyone to smell as good as Antonio did. She’d never known anyone could look so good in a black tuxedo.

There were many things she hadn’t known before he’d torpedoed into her life.

“Thanks again for taking the blame with Pieta, but I need to get back to work.” Desperate to get away but not wanting him to see, Jodie walked as quickly as she could without breaking into a run up the narrow corridor.

She pushed open the door that led into another corridor, at the end of which was the relative safety of the stateroom. At least in there she would be surrounded by people who would be getting more raucous as time passed. Her duties would increase, she would become busier – so busy she’d be able to tune Antonio out and forget he was even there.
