The Surgeon’s Best Friend Dilemma - Chapter 19

'Where’s Tasha and Eddy?’ Chloe asked, the moment Evan set foot in the hospital room.

The mere mention of her name was akin to someone ripping a scab off a deep wound and opening it up all over again. It had been several days since Natasha had ended things, and he hadn’t seen her since. No doubt she was busy back on her own ward, but he wasn’t sure if it made it better or worse that he hadn’t crossed paths with her again. His life seemed so empty beyond the hospital doors and he knew there was no replacing the void she’d left.

He’d tried to reason away her absence, telling himself it was for the best. That she was just like his family and his ex, and he was better off without her. Except he knew it wasn’t true. She was the best thing that had ever happened to him. It had just taken him an age to realise it, and now it was too late. He’d stuffed up and lost her forever.

‘Well, Natasha is a very busy doctor. She has lots of patients and she only gets to bring Eddy in on special occasions.’

‘Am I a casion’?’ A newly animated Chloe asked hopefully, her bond with the pair clearly helping her recovery.

Evan’s heart strings were already at breaking point, and they began to ping apart one by one. He could relate to the little girl’s want to see Natasha again, because he felt the same way.

She had been the highlight of every day for him, and without her the world was a very dark place. He hadn’t fought hard enough for her. Of course she’d been hurt by him going to her mother, when her last partner had cheated on her with the same woman. He’d been too wrapped up in his own loss and pain to understand how much his actions had hurt her. Given another chance he’d beg for her forgiveness and promise never to speak to her mother again. She was right, it was her choice whether she ever wanted to do that, not his.

Unfortunately, he feared that the wound Natasha had suffered at his hands was one he couldn’t fix.
