'Mum? What are you doing calling me at work?’ There were so many things wrong with this scenario, Natasha didn’t know where to start.
‘Well, I knew you wouldn’t answer a call or text from me, so I thought this would be the best way to force you to speak to me.’
‘Why? What could you possibly have to say to me?’ Nothing would undo the pain of betrayal she’d inflicted on Natasha.
A heavy sigh. ‘I told him this was a bad idea.’
‘Told who?’ Natasha wasn’t in the mood for guessing games. She just wanted her mother to say whatever it was she’d phoned for and be done.
‘Evan. He’s a lovely man, isn’t he?’ Her mother’s voice took on a dreamy quality which only served to increase the feeling of dread rising from the pit of Natasha’s stomach.
‘What’s Evan got to do with you calling?’
‘Oh, we’ve been in touch for a while. He thought I should reach out and try to mend a few bridges. Maybe you could come over for a chat to clear the air. Bring Evan with you.’
‘We’ll see. I have to go now.’ Natasha hung up before she said something she’d regret.
Apart from the fact her mother hadn’t sounded the least bit apologetic, she’d revealed that she and Evan had been in contact without Natasha’s knowledge. It felt like another betrayal. Even though she didn’t think the two of them were doing anything untoward, the revelation was a gut punch. Evan, the one person she thought she could trust, had conspired with the woman who’d caused Natasha so much pain, behind her back.
After last night she’d been hoping there might be a future for her and Evan as a couple. She’d been willing to risk her heart by sharing her life with him. Finding out that he was capable of keeping secrets, that she couldn’t read him as well as she’d thought, made her rethink that fantasy. What hope could they have of a life together if she couldn’t trust him? If she was ever going to let someone into her life again, she had to be completely sure they weren’t going to betray her, and Evan had just proved he was as guilty as her mother and ex of that.
From now on, they’d go back to being colleagues and nothing more. She didn’t even know if a friendship was still on the cards.
