'It’s been a day, hasn’t it?’ Evan broke the silence in the car as they drove back to Natasha’s place. She’d been uncharacteristically quiet since they’d left the park. There was a fizzing atmosphere between them which felt as though there was something building in the air. For him, it had started the second they’d accidentally brushed against one another, and he wondered when a simple touch had been capable of giving him heart palpitations.
‘You can say that again.’ Her smile didn’t have its usual warmth that Evan was accustomed to seeing. Something was definitely bothering her.
They pulled up outside Natasha’s place and he helped her get Eddy out of the car. ‘Do you want me to go and let you get a much-needed rest?’
As much as he enjoyed their time together, and he’d begun to look forward to her company over dinner, he didn’t want to outstay his welcome. Perhaps she’d noticed the shift between them and he’d unintentionally made her uncomfortable. The last thing he wanted to do was ruin their relationship when Natasha had been his lifeline when he’d been drowning in the darkness not so long ago.
Natasha frowned at him as she opened the door. ‘Don’t be silly. I’m expecting you to order the pizza and entertain Eddy while I go for a shower.’
Her fake indignation helped him relax a little, and he followed her inside. She didn’t give him a chance to argue, or ask about the change in mood between them, bounding towards the bathroom and leaving him with the dog.
‘Pepperoni, or meat feast?’ he asked Eddy.
Eddy’s double bark sealed the deal. ‘Meat feast it is.’
Evan ordered their dinner and settled down on the sofa in the living room. It looked like he was in for another evening in Natasha’s company, and he couldn’t say he was upset about it.
