Sweat dripped down the side of Nolan’s face but he let it fall. To wipe it away, he would either have to drag the pilfered flower across his face or release Sienna’s hand. Neither option was desirable.
Perhaps he should question her on what had just happened. He was fairly sure he had just committed, not a crime, but not something strictly right. He waited for the inevitable censure from his mind but nothing happened. Perhaps it was the hand clasped in his that robbed him of his normal anxiety in social situations. If that were the case, he was never going to let her go. ‘What’s the next item on the list?’
‘It is to find a bottle.’ She said this without consulting the paper; did that mean she didn’t want to let go of his hand either? Or had she forgotten she was even holding it? ‘It is to be an interesting vessel for storing whiskey, for Hawk and Maggie presumably.’
‘Are we doing their work for them?’
She laughed, and pride surged through him at amusing this vibrant woman. ‘Possibly.’
‘Are we going to have to do something illegal to get this too?’
She paused. ‘No.’
‘That denial does not fill me with confidence.’
‘I thought we could fetch something from the Dower House.’ She gestured at the grand building coming up in front of them.
‘Trespassing, then?’
‘Does it count as a crime if the house sort of belongs to you?’
‘It is the “sort of” which makes this dubious.’ Her eyes were shining with delight and a thrill raced through him.
‘No one lives there. I do not think entering counts as a transgression.’
He wasn’t about to point out all the potential problems, not when she was looking at him like he wasn’t dull.
Inside, the house was cool, a welcome relief from the scorching heat outside. She led him deeper into the building, appearing to have an idea of what she was after. ‘Dare I ask what we are going to steal this time?’
A loud laugh burst out of her and his heart soared. He could get used to being the man who made her sound like that.
‘My grandmama had a beautiful perfume collection. I am sure that some of the bottles will still be here.’
They were heading to the bottom of the stairs and he realised she was going to take him into a bedroom. This was where, if he had any sense left, he should stop them, but he didn’t.
