Nolan’s skin drained of colour as voices reached them in the Dowager’s bedchamber. If the two of them were caught up here, nothing would stop them from having to get married. The scandal would be phenomenal. And yet…she was completely frozen.
‘Sienna,’ he whispered. ‘Is there any way out of the house that does not involve going down the main staircase?’
‘Not unless you want to jump out of the window.’
‘That is not ideal.’
Nolan’s gaze was darting around them as if searching for something that would get them out of this predicament, but he was unlikely to find anything that would make them invisible.
The bottom step of the stairs creaked. ‘We could try up here,’ said a voice Sienna recognised but couldn’t place.
‘Ooh, I am not sure about climbing stairs at my age,’ said her companion.
Sienna whimpered. They were going to find her and Nolan. She began to walk to the window.
‘What are you doing?’ he hissed.
‘We will have to jump.’
‘Have you entirely lost your mind?’
‘My reputation will be ruined.’ Not to mention the wedding he would be forced to endure. How he would despise her!
‘Better that than dead,’ he replied, not seeming to grasp the seriousness of the situation. ‘I have an idea.’ He threw the dust sheet back over the desk. It looked shoddy but it would have to do. She was still incapable of proper thought. ‘Come on,’ he said, grabbing her hand once more and dragging her over to the bed.
‘I do not think this will help,’ she said.
He shot her a look that would have withered her insides, if they were not already destroyed from sheer panic. He lifted the sheet covering the bed and, without saying anything further, dragged her into the space underneath.
