Chapter 19
Ben awoke with a start of fear and guilt. As if in protest of his movement, Ellie murmured and shifted against him. Her head lay on his shoulder, her hair like silk against his skin. She was so warm, too, and small and delicate...so vulnerable.
A groan burned the back of his throat. But he held it in, unwilling to disturb her as much as he was disturbed. He’d crossed a line. Hell, he’d be lucky if his boss didn’t fire him. Before he confessed to his mistake, he had to find her assailant. He picked up his phone and scrolled through the dating app. Nobody jumped out as particularly wealthy.
“Looking for a date?” she asked, startling him again.
“No,” he said. He had everything he wanted and more in bed with him. But he didn’t deserve her—not after taking advantage of her.
“I don’t think any of them are your type,” she said.
“They don’t look like yours either,” he said.
She sighed, her breath whispering across his skin. “No. They weren’t.”
He handed her his phone again. “Check your emails,” he suggested.
“Why?”
“I don’t think anyone was trying to delete this app,” he said. “They were after something else.”
She signed in and scrolled through an overflowing in-box.
“Only look at what you received or sent around the time of the attack,” he suggested.
In the glow of his phone, her brow furrowed as she studied the messages. “There is something missing.”
He should have been relieved because he knew this was it—the clue that would lead to her attacker. But instead he felt the heavy weight of dread. If this was it...
Then he would be leaving her soon. Too soon...
