The sense of déjà vu was so strong that it almost gave Hannah whiplash. She was behind a fern on the edge of the ballroom at Santanger Palace. The crème de la crème of Santanger society was there, women in gorgeous gowns and the men in tuxedoes.
It was a party to celebrate the homecoming of one of Santanger’s most famous expats—Lukas Zárate. It had been announced that he was moving his operations to a new facility in Santanger, which would bring hundreds of jobs to the island and encourage growth in the tech sector.
He had been trying to contact her, but still hurt over how he’d left her that morning a few weeks ago, Hannah had avoided him. She was sure he just wanted to apologise so that he could get on with his new life with a clear conscience.
The thought of him moving back here had once been one of her biggest fantasies, but now the reality was excruciating. She’d even contemplated that she might have to leave.
She could see Lukas, head and shoulders above everyone, his dark blond hair glinting under the lights. Shoulders broad. The King—who was still stomping around the place like a bear with a sore head after the announcement that his engagement was over—had introduced Lukas and welcomed him back to Santanger.
The crowd went quiet again when Lukas tapped on a glass with a spoon. He said, ‘If you wouldn’t mind indulging me for a moment, there’s someone who I wanted to be here with me this evening and the evening won’t be complete unless she is here…’
Hannah’s insides plummeted. He was already moving on. And she would have to witness this now, hiding like a criminal behind a plant—
‘Hannah Mendoza, I know you’re here.’
