Braden had been right all those months ago. It had been too dangerous. Sam had fallen irrevocably in love instead of just having the fling she’d planned on with the hunky hotshot superintendent.
Nothing with Braden Zimmer ever went according to plan. But instead of finding that as scary as she once had, she found it thrilling now. And because the note suggested that Mack was behind this surprise, she didn’t feel as if they were in any real danger. That gunshot last night had to have been some hunter or maybe a kid thinking they were firing at an animal.
She and Braden were safe. Except for all the heat and passion between them. She didn’t wait for one of their phones to charge. She didn’t even wait for him to look in the refrigerator for food; she needed him too badly. So she reached for the buttons on his shirt and undid them as she had last night until the material parted and revealed his muscular chest. The man expected all of his team to be in peak physical condition, and he led by example. Her breath hissed out between her teeth as desire overwhelmed her.
“How the hell did I get so lucky?” she murmured.
His dark eyes glowed with passion as he stared down at her. “I’m the lucky one.”
But was he? He’d already been through so much with his first wife, who’d cheated on him, and then he’d fallen for Sam, a woman who spent more time away from home than with him. A woman who wasn’t ready yet to give him the family he wanted. She wanted to be ready to give him everything he desired, everything he deserved. Maybe in a little while.
They had time. And she took her time, lowering the zipper of his jeans, freeing him from his boxers, sliding her fingers up and down his shaft.
He groaned and gritted his teeth. And then Braden, who was always more comfortable giving than receiving, picked her up and carried her through an open doorway into a bedroom. He lowered her down on a bed and followed her. But he held his weight from her, touching her with only his lips. His mouth on hers, gently at first, just skimming his lips over hers until he deepened the kiss. As he kissed her, he undressed her. Then he lowered his mouth, sliding it over her breasts, nibbling playfully on them before stroking his tongue across first one nipple and then the other.
She arched up and moaned at the intensity of pleasure that spread through her body from her nipples to her core. And then he moved his mouth lower, making love to her with his lips and his tongue. An orgasm gripped her, making her shudder and scream his name.
But instead of going limp with release, she tugged him down on her, inside her, and as he slid deep, it felt as if he was bringing her home. As if he was home…
“I love you,” she whispered. “I love you so damn much.” And once that would have scared her even more than being shot at, but she knew she could trust Braden with her heart.
He moved faster then, as if his usual iron control had snapped, and he stared down at her with his dark eyes full of passion and love. The way his body stroked hers sent another orgasm shuddering through her.
Then he joined her in release, her name leaving his lips in a low moan. When he started to ease up, to pull out, Sam clutched him closer. She didn’t want to let him go. Ever…
Despite the perspiration on her skin, a chill ran down her spine. A chill of foreboding that she and Braden might not have forever.
