Ellie awoke hearing ringing in her head. Then settled back onto the sheets and smiled, the hum of arousal nothing compared to the giddy rhythm of her heartbeat.
Baz.
Last night had been… Everything. He’d made love to her with such intensity—touching her, tasting her, possessing her—neither of them able to get enough of each other.
And while they hadn’t talked much—because they’d been too busy devouring each other—it had felt so intimate. The possibilities endless.
She rolled over, to find the bed beside her empty. And the sheets cold.
‘Baz?’ she called out, but the room was silent.
She frowned. Then the ringing came again. Her phone.
Hope bloomed. Was that him? It had to be…
She noticed the soreness in unfamiliar places as she scrambled to find her purse. Eventually she located it shoved under the bed and yanked out the phone.
Not Baz, but Claire, the girl Lorenti had hired as her assistant while Tali was away.
She refused to feel disappointed.
Of course he’d left. She’d overslept. It was nearly ten o’clock and Tali and Lorenti were due to arrive this afternoon. She had to get up too and clean the room. But surely, Baz would contact her soon.
They’d connected so strongly. He had to have felt it, too.
She hit the answer button. ‘Hi, Claire… Sorry, I…’
‘Ellie, where are you?’ Claire said, sounding anxious. ‘We just got a call from Mr Lorenti’s assistant, Aldo. They’ll be here by noon.’
Panic seared through her, and no small amount of embarrassment.
Crap! She’d been busy daydreaming about Baz when her job could be in jeopardy.
Leaping out of bed, she put her feelings on lockdown—and rushed round the room tugging her clothes on, then stripping the bed, while issuing instructions to Claire.
The next few hours passed by in a fog of manic last-minute preparations for the Lorentis’ arrival. But she was grateful for the distraction. Because Baz still hadn’t contacted her.
When Tali and Mr Lorenti arrived though, it became apparent their marriage was already in crisis. Lorenti had seemed furious when being introduced to Elsa, Tali’s mum, Westwick Hall’s former housekeeper who now lived on the estate.
The heavens opened that afternoon, and rumours soon abounded that Lorenti—who was brooding in the library while Tali had disappeared—was planning to sell Westwick. Ellie found her mood sinking even further. Had Baz’s cynical assessment of Tali’s hasty marriage been true?
But when they got the news the next morning that the newlyweds’ argument hadn’t been serious—even though it had looked serious to Ellie—she couldn’t regain her optimism… Because she’d done an internet search on Brody Kane…
And discovered Kane Properties was a global conglomerate. And Brody Kane the billionaire owner and CEO who now lived in Manhattan!
Why hadn’t he told her how successful he’d become? Probably because their night had always just been a casual hookup to him.
They hadn’t connected. She’d become invested in something that wasn’t real…
She felt sick inside, and stupid… But also heartbroken, because their beautiful, hopeful night had meant everything to her and nothing to him.
Then six weeks later, she discovered that she had a great deal more to worry about… Because Brody Kane hadn’t just broken her heart, he’d left her pregnant with his baby.
