It all started with a television commercial.
I had my future planned. I enjoyed my work as an infant teacher, my son and daughter were at junior school, and I didn't really envisage any changes to my way of life. But then I discovered Harlequin Mills & Boon. The commercial showed a fire blazing in the hearth, and a young woman sitting down to enjoy an hour or so of delicious escapism with a romance novel.
Never having read a Harlequin Mills and Boon novel, I made up my mind to see what they were all about. I was surprised to find how absorbing and interesting they were and I started reading them all the time. I found that the more I read, the more I had the overwhelming desire to try to write one.
Encouraged by my husband and family, I persevered until my first book was accepted, and after several books were published, I decided to write full time.
I often miss the infants who were in my care, but this is counterbalanced by the pleasure of creating stories for the enjoyment of others. As each story unfolds, the characters become very real to me and I share every one of their emotional hurdles on their way to finally reaching that ultimate happy ending. Over the years, working from my home in the Midlands has given me the freedom to branch out into other areas. For a long time I was a part-time tutor of creative writing at my local college of adult education and I’m a member of my local writers' club, where I became president for a year. It was a role that involved bringing in lively, published writers to pass on some of their tips for success.
I have found that writing for Harlequin Mills and Boon is an exciting and fulfilling experience, one that I would not have missed for the world.
