Deja-vu

Rating By R,16/01/2015

No prizes for those who guessed that the author's next book would be about Ryan and Erin! The story began in Edinburgh, Scotland and while I am sure it is a lovely city I did find the location rather lacking colour. I personally found the concentration on Erin's just completed divorce rather depressing. When the setting turned to Boston, USA the story gathered pace and improved greatly. This was the third in a trilogy containing many of the same characters and both Ryan in particular and Erin were personable but many parts of the the stories ran concurrently and if you had read the previous novels you had a feeling of deja-vu. I think it would have been better to issue the books in close sequence so you could regard it as one entity. There was some good medical detail included but for some reason I just couldn't fully warm to this book as i did with the author's previous works. Six out of ten

This book just wasn't as good as the last. The first few chapters were like one giant prologue, the story didn't start properly until it reached Boston and by that point half the book was gone. It was strange seeing scenes you've already read being played out from the point of view of another character, and because you knew what was happening this book seemed to lose emotional punch. The ending seemed rushed. I would much rather have had one short prologue and the rest of the book exploring the relationship in Boston between the two main characters.
