A Medieval tale

Rating By Julia,17/12/2014

It is good to see some more medieval stories coming back into the selection. The story starts by introducing us to Katherine and her younger sister Matilda. Katherine is heavy with child but after losing several she has traveled to a shine to pray that this one is delivered. One the way back home they are attacked. Gilan, Comte de Cormeilles with his friend Henry, Duke of Lancaster are on the way to visit King Richard to get back Henry’s land which the King had taken away. Gilan and a few of his knights come to the aid of Katherine and Matilda but having no idea who attacked whom, they decide to subdue everyone. That included a cunning archer who nearly hits Gilan. He creeps up on the archer and is stunned to find that the archer is none other than Matilda. Matilda falls as she is startled into a river and Gilan goes to pull her out. She is not happy at his interference but finds that her sister’s disappearance more urgent than a set down to the knight. They find Katherine, meet up with Henry and his men and ride for Neen. John is a supporter of the King and is nervous to have a man who is against the King. Katherine goes into labor and Matilda goes to help. Knowing her sister is in trouble she tries to fetch her mother but Gilan sees her going alone and goes with her. Her mother is not able to go but on the way back Gilan tells Matilda that he thinks she can deal with it on her own. After the birth John is drunk and up happy and takes it partly out of Matilda. She runs from John back home but Gilan goes with her. She wants to join Gilan to be able to see her brother who is with King Richard, but Gilan says no. Matilda is such a stubborn character that she decides to go anyway. Gilan, of course, catches her in the act of following the group and takes her into the group as a guide. They have an adventurous journey and within sight of Richard they are attacked and Matilda is badly hurt causing Gilan to take charge of her care. He takes her home where Matilda encounters Isabelle who is Gilan’s sister-in-law. She is not a very nice person and causes Matilda to leave. Gilan goes after her and all ends with a happy ever after. The epilogue covers some of the wedding but not the ceremony and we do not know what happens with Isabelle. The books is more on the discovery of the characters and the journey they share.
