Previous Stories Linked _________ Release Date 1 __ Haunted by the Earl’s Touch ___ 02/13 (Bane and Mary) 2 __ Captured Countess __________ 12/14 (Gabe and Nicky) The author’s note was wonderful reminding us that this story is linked by characters and place to a previous story. We met both Bane, Earl Beresford and Mary experiencing their home of Beresford Abbey. Bane is in the first chapter of this book and is one of the few people that Gabriel (Gabe) D’Arcy, the Marquess of Mooreshead trusts. Marquess in name only because his father had denied him his inheritance claiming that Gabe was sympathetic to the common man and his feelings were close to that of America. His father disowned him for the actions he took. The meeting between Nicolette (Nicky) and Gabe for the first time is a very strong scene. The connection between them is strong from the start, but in meeting a contact just before Nicky, Gabe knew that someone had been sent to test his loyalties, the only problem with that is that he does not know if she works for the French or the English. After meeting they agree to a ride in the park early morning. During this ride an event happens that turns everything around for Gabe. He promised previously to take the Countess to breakfast which he does, but then takes control of the situation and takes her to Meak, a home that was given by his aunt. Gabe was injured and the mistrust between the two become stronger as Nicky realises that she is not heading home. After a night at Meak they continue on to Beresford Abbey. Nicky is taken by the rumours of a ghost and believes she may have seen it, when she takes it open herself to explore the hidden tunnels. After being hurt in those tunnels, Gabe finds Nicky and takes her back to her room. It is then that they try to clear the water and Gabe tells Nicky what he was doing and Nicky tells Gabe about her life and her sister. Gabe with his ‘valet’ Freddy who is really another spy and the heir to his family but again like Gabe he does not see eye to eye with his father. They go with Nicky on board Gabe’s boat, the Phoenix, to meet up with the French. He tells Nicky to trust him and then she sees why as she comes face to face with the man who burned her home and killed anyone trying to flee. Chiroux remembered Nicky but could do nothing as she was under Gabe’s protection. They are charged with killing a member of the royals and Gabe works it around with the help of Freddy that they appear to kill. They make for France, Chiroux’s original plan was that Nicky kills the royal and ends up dead herself but Gabe with his clever planning and thinking worked it so Chiroux was not wise to the double cross that was happening. Freddy with the aid of the Phoenix crew take the French crew and Chiroux into custody. However, Chiroux has one last card to play being that of Nicky’s sister Minette being held in France under the guard of Moreau who had tricked Nicky in England. Again they risk a plan and manage to get Minette safely out and back to England. Gabe took them all to his London house but his spy master knocked and insisted he goes with him and to bring the Countess and they are taken to the palace and to an audience with the Queen. Well the Queen has some ideas on how things should be and once that is sorted out Gabe asks Nicky a special question. Spy stories are always fun and this one was too. Minette and Freddy have a wonderful scene on the boat. Minette is now with Nicky and Gabe at Meak, but when she and Freddy are in the same room they clash, however at the end of the story with meeting Bane and Mary also at Meak we find Freddy is still working and Minette is bored but after that neither can be found. I hope that the author means to write their story too. I would love to see what happens to Freddy and Minette and catch up with Nicky and Gabe, Bane and Mary. The story flowed quickly and was hard to put down. The ghost along with the spy plot kept you on your toes. The wedding was wonderful even though it was lacking many details. The scene at the end was sweet. Note relevant to the story.... ON A PERSONAL NOTE ABOUT THE EBOOK VERSION – The extract of a non-related book is annoying and pointless and I wish Mills and Boon would go back to just putting the back of the paper book into the Ebook and stop adding unrelated material to the books. I understand if it was the next book in the series or a book by the same author but neither of these happen and it is getting a touch annoying.
