Christmas Trilogy ...

Rating By Julia,14/10/2014

One of my favourite parts of the run up to Christmas is the West trilogy. These wonderful gems that pull at the heart strings and give you a Christmas treat. This year the Wild West Christmas……. A Family for the Rancher by Jenna Kernan Such a wonderful heart warming tale of two people who fell in love and then separated only to find each other 2 years later. Dillen Roach is typical man of the age. He needs to feel he is the provider for his loved ones so when he falls in love and his love tells him a great secret that she is a wealthy heiress he leaves her, but all is not as it appears. Dillen has had his life turned upside down by a selfish parent. His whole world collapsed and he needed to find new purpose. He was hoping to become wealthy in his own right so he could feel on the same level as his love. Helping his sister and mother to survive the scandal and seeing his sister happily married, he leaves. Alice may have everything at her fingertips in life and her life may seem rosy to an outsider but to her it is far from perfect. Years spent turning away suitors, because they only want her money, she comes across Dillen when her father a doctor treats Dillen’s mother. She falls and hard but is heart broken when he leaves seeing it as her fault. 2 years later, a new tragedy hits both Alice and Dillen throwing them back into each others’ space. Add to the mix 2 lovely children and it certainly tugs at the heart strings. A story for a cold winter’s day when wrapped up warm and cosy. The story is endearing and sweet and really makes you care about the characters even on such a short story. Again like with many, the only drawback, was the ending. A fuller one was needed but the ending that was there will fill you with happiness it is just I love to know how they all got on further down the line and would have liked to see them in 3 or 4 years time to truly end the tale wrapping the story up with a pretty Christmas bow. Dance with a Cowboy by Kathryn Albright A tale of two people parted by circumstances and come back together, 5 years on. Garrett is a hard working quiet sort of man. His family suffer a tragedy which involves the only woman he has ever loved. She moved away and now 5 years later she has returned. Kathleen has always felt dislodged since her marriage. Now she feels coming back was the right thing to do but doubt rises and makes her wonder if she should have stayed away after all. It is a heart felt tale, of family coming together during the season of miracles. The characters are all well written and Molly really adds some sass to the story. It is a real community type story as well as a family one. The story leaves you feeling warm and happy but for me I wanted more of an ending especially a Christmas morning and to see them perhaps 2 or 3 Christmases on. Christmas in Smoke River by Lynna Banning It is wonderful to return to Smoke River again. The story was centred around Lilah a new arrival to the town and Gale who is a foreman at the Rocking K ranch. They do not start well as Gale was told to run the cattle down the town main street ending up with some strays trampling Lilah’s garden. The story has great heart and a sweetness to it. The other characters come in nicely but we do not see many of the regulars from the previous stories as much. The ending also was wonderful but with the other stories in this trilogy, it could have done with an ending, that looked back on the characters a few years on. I was looking forward to this story very much because it takes us back to Smoke River, but unfortunately although the story is a good and sweet story it was written in the ‘First Person’ context full of ‘I’ and ‘My’ and it drove me up the wall. It took all the enjoyment out of the story for me. It is a pet dislike to have a ‘First Person’ story, but I must hand it to the author as she told you when she was switching from Lilah and Gale. However, I do not think my views of the ‘First Person’ stories will ever change because there is something magical in reading a story that is not being relayed by the characters, you can feel relaxed that it is not your world and you are just spending time looking in just like a snow globe, you wouldn’t want to be inside but looking in is an enjoyment and I find that with those types of stories. I love seeing Smoke River again and I enjoyed the story a bit but hope the author writes more Smoke River but stay to her original format and not do this again with another story. It spoils the whole atmosphere and makes it a lot harder to read but in having read the story it could have been a gem if written in the same way as the previous Smoke Rivers. The characters and the atmosphere was enjoyable. Overall A good collection of Christmas Tales. Fun to read but you may have to add a future for the characters. The characters from all 3 authors were engaging and heart warming. However, they seemed to need a little more. Stories in these collections in past years have always left you with a fantastic feeling of Christmas, these do the same but the endings need to be fuller to make these a treasure. Longer than the normal collection but just as enjoyable.
