Romance for Cynics, or Why Love is Just as Important the Second Time Around
Those of you who have been following me for a while will know how big I am on busting the Mills & Boon myth, and how delighted I am whenever I find a new book that should be branded “Mythbuster”. Such is Nicola Marsh’s new book.
Lucy is divorced. Perhaps less surprising these days, but for some reason this book really echoed with me. It’s common to find heroines who have been engaged or in long term relationships that have broken down; it’s even more common to discover that an ex-boyfriend was an absolute (for lack of another word) douchebag.
But divorce is something that’s less often touched upon, unless it’s so that the divorcees can fall in love all over again.
Therefore Romance for Cynics seems all the more poignant. Not all marriages work, that’s a fact. In fact there are any number of statistics that make my inner romantic cry. But I think what’s often left out is that there’s life after this. People meet other people, they fall in love, it happens. And I think that it’s so important for this to be recognised and celebrated.
Especially when the new man comes in the form of Cashel Burgess. Gorgeous, intelligent and - too his utmost horror – rather touchingly sentimental over Lucy, he seems like the perfect person for her to take a chance on.
Nonetheless, this is no “guy rescuing girl” moment. She has a life, has her own business, and an adorably sassy grandmother – in fact, the last thing she needs is a man. And that’s what makes Marsh’s book perfect. Lucy doesn’t need to fall in love, but she does. She falls in love with sarc-y comments and impromptu sex and a guy who actually listens when she talks.
And gorgeously strong woman.

UK Delivery Rates
We offer two rates for UK delivery – standard and special. The cost of shipping is charged per order, so you’ll pay the same rate no matter how many books you purchase!
Costs & delivery times:
- Standard (up to 3-5 working days) £2.00
- Special (2-3 working days) £5.00
Please note that orders placed on a Friday may take longer to arrive.
As with UK deliveries, the cost for shipping overseas is charged per order, so you pay £5.00 however many books you decide to order.
We aim to ship your parcel within one working day of purchase, and it will usually be delivered within 10 days. Due to variances in postal delivery services we cannot guarantee processing time, but your parcel will usually arrive within 14 working days of your order.
Lost or Delayed Deliveries
Please allow up to ten working days for your parcel to arrive by standard delivery. If your parcel has not arrived after this time, contact customer services for help. For UK customers who have chosen the Special delivery option, please allow up to five days before contacting us.
Please note that we cannot be held responsible for any delays incurred as a result of Royal Mail postal strikes, overseas postal service disputes or national public holidays including bank holidays.
If you wish to return a book or parcel for whatever reason, please contact customer services and they will make a record of this on your account. Please ensure that book/s are sent back unread, in the original packaging and your invoice/despatch note is included. Without this we will not be able to credit your account accordingly.
In the event that you receive a faulty book, simply contact customer services and they will send you a replacement straight away.
As eBooks cannot be physically returned, it is our policy to not offer refunds on successful purchases.
