Quite Possibly The Greatest Romantic Hero Ever
Okay, so possibly I'm exaggerating. Heathcliff, Romeo, Christian Grey aside. I have read a lot of books over the years, and Romantic fiction in particular and this is the first book that I felt I absolutely positively had to review. I gave up sleep and dinner to finish this such was my absorption in the story. Wren is one of the most amazing females in the genre, an every woman if you like. Reading Cake, I found myself identifying with Wren more than any other character I've read yet, but I couldn't physically resemble her less. Her sensibilities, her POV all ridiculously realistic. Loved her. A more complete heroine I have yet to read. And Gregori Ivanov... A scarlet mohawked, pierced nippled, cyrillic tattooed multi medium artist. Did I say he was brooding and dry of wit? Mono syllabic yet meaningful? Loves women, fine champagne and gourmet pastries? Russian? Hung like a stallion? I have never needed a sit down and a cup of tea quite as much as I did reading Cake. Despite being a Novella and taking me just under an hour to read I have never been quite as involved in a book before. Naturally we know it's going to have a Happily Ever After yet the getting to that point is fraught with so much tension and pitfalls that there is always an element of doubt. What if the author, the amazing Lauren Dane, pulls the proverbial rug out from underneath us at the last minute? I would actually sob like a newborn. She doesn't (or does she?) but Wren and Gregori's story blew me away. So much so that I now seriously considering lurking outside of the Russian Consulate in the hopes of snagging my own uber hottie and becoming his Kotyonok (Russian for Kitten - meow).
In summation, hot as heck, romantic and charming and as sweet as Cake.
Can you tell I loved it?
