A MARRIAGE MOST INCONVENIENT!

Agreeing to a fake betrothal should suit both society dressmaker Belle Marchmain and landowner Adam Davenant fittingly – clearing Belle’s debts and keeping Adam’s husband-hunters at bay. Even if blue-blooded Belle, with her extravagant clothes and razor-sharp tongue, despises the very air that nouveau riche Adam breathes!

If Adam wants a wife who’s agreeable he has his work cut out. Yet when his demanding mouth caresses Belle’s for the first time ever she’s lost for words. Maybe Adam’s found the one way to tame the only woman who’s ever stood up to him and make her say, ‘I do…’

A nice classic story with a touch of the gaudy.

Oh dear!

Mrs Ashford is one of my favourite M&B Historical authors and her first three books in the line were of the highest calibre. Her writing style makes her books a pleasure to read and certainly in this latest novel it is as good as ever and she crafts a nice plot. Adam is a fitting, down-to-earth, lovable hero of his time with a heart of gold and I can't fault his actions given the circumstances. However, the major problem for me is with Belle. She is impossible to like. Right from the start her attitude grates and you just cannot like her - condescending, childish and provocative. Even revelations later in the book don't mitigate this for me. There is a sub-plot concerning her brother who is weak and lying, arrogant and self-pitying. His "instantaneous" conversion at the end of the book just doesn't ring true. The last quarter of the book moves at a thrilling pace but overall it lacks the magic I have come to expect from this author. Six out of ten Thr lasy part of the book moves at a thrilling fast pace
