At last!

Rating By R,18/06/2013

It's been a long time coming but at last Ms MacKay has come up with a novel to rival her stunning debut in this emotionally charged story. Rather than her usual small town New Zealand setting the author has chosen the background of the capital Auckland although most of the story takes place within hospital walls. Both commitment shy Mitchell and Jodi are compelling and empathetic characters and you can identify with their actions and emotions as the story based around the need for their son, whose existence Mitchell has hitherto been unaware of, to have a new kidney, unfolds. There was an interesting secondary plot involving a television documentary being made in the hospital department with a particularly objectionable anchorman called Carl and I was delighted at how this part of the plot ended. The one downside is that this book is part of a duo concerning Mitchell's twin brother, the antagonism between them being an important part of the plot, and you are rather left with the story unfinished until you read the second book. This notwithstanding, this is an excellent and engrossing read and a welcome return to the author'sbest. Ten out of ten
