A Match Made In Maui

Written by Nina Singh

Chapter Twenty

Sounded like the party was in full swing. Jason lifted his sweaty bottle of beer and took a long drink.

The canvas tent that currently housed Clint and Rita’s wedding reception was set up about three acres behind the cabana bar where Jason sat, his thoughts fully focused on Tessa.

What was she doing at the moment? He’d heard several slow songs played already. Had some unknown groomsman invited her onto the dance floor? Had he held her in his arms as they slowly swayed to the music?

Had he swept her off her feet the way Jason had once?

He squeezed his hand around the glass bottle, so tight his fingers began to ache.

He’d blown it. He had nobody but himself to blame that the woman he loved might be in someone else’s arms as he sat here seething.

He should have never come out tonight. He should have ordered room service instead. His mood would have been better served if he’d wallowed on his balcony, staring at the ocean in the distance, contemplating all the ways he’d failed when it came to Tessa.

Nothing said he couldn’t carry out the wallowing now. Dropping several bills onto the bar, Jason stood. He couldn’t bear to listen to the noise from the wedding any longer.

His breath caught when he turned to leave. Tessa stood several feet away, looking so beautiful in a burgundy satin gown that he thought he must be imagining her.

“Tessa?” Jason was looking at her as if she might not be real.

She took a hesitant step forward. “So…I could use a plus one at this wedding I’m attending.”

Tessa somehow sensed that Jason would be here. She also knew she had to come find him. As happy as she was for Rita and Clint, and as lovely as the ceremony and reception afterward had turned out, Tessa had been nothing short of miserable. Watching the happy couple only solidified what she already knew in her heart.

She loved Jason Robahi like she would never love anyone else. Didn’t that kind of love warrant a second chance? She’d never forgive herself if she didn’t make an effort to find out.

Jason reached her in two short strides.

“What do you say?” she asked. “Wanna be my guest at this party?”

He took her hands in his, pulled her close, then trailed a line of kisses along her cheek and down to her neck.

“Is that a yes, then?” she teased when she finally found her breath.

Jason spoke softly into her ear. “I know I let you down once. But if you’ll allow me, I want to spend the rest of our lives proving that it won’t happen again. I love you, Tessa Cambell. Please say the next wedding you’ll attend will be the one where you’re my bride.”

Tessa answered by throwing her arms around his neck and allowing herself to meld into his length. Looked like she’d found her own groom.
