A Match Made In Maui

Written by Nina Singh

Chapter Fourteen

Tessa wasn’t sure how long they’d been sitting there, staring at the ocean. She’d lost her appetite for the cold treat in her hand long ago. It was dripping like a faulty faucet onto the sand in front of her.

What a waste.

She didn’t realize she’d spoken the words out loud until Jason responded. “Is it the shaved ice you’re referring to, or something else?”

She had no response to that.

Jason released a deep sigh. “I know I have no right, but I really wish you would talk to me, Tessa.”

Where would she begin, she wondered. She couldn’t very well start with the conflicting storm of emotions that had erupted within her when she’d thought she might be carrying their baby. A heady sense of wonder combined with the desperate, icy fear of an unexpected pregnancy. Or perhaps she could get into all the doubts that had flooded her about what type of mother she would be, especially if she had to be responsible for their child alone.

No, she couldn’t get into any of that. There was no point.

“What would you like to hear?”

“Anything, Tessa. Curse at me. Chew me out. It would be better than this attempt to dismiss what’s so clearly still between us.”

“There can’t be anything between us.” Not anymore. She couldn’t risk it. When or if she chose to be with a man, it was going to be someone who was willing to stay by her side. Someone devoted to her regardless of the changing tides.

His next words surprised her. “Sometimes, I wish that merger had never happened.”

“That deal made you a billionaire. Then there’s your father.”

He shrugged. “His reaction wasn’t exactly what I’d anticipated. I should have known,” he added, bitterness scratching his voice.

“What do you mean?”

“I realized even the deal of a lifetime isn’t going to change his mind about how fully his son let him down.” He gazed off toward the water. “There was never any use in even trying.”

Several beats passed before she could speak. They’d come too far to not complete this conversation. “Your half-hearted attempts at contacting me or returning my messages led me to a very clear conclusion, Jason.”

“What was that?”

“That I felt much more for you than you felt for me. That I was the forgettable fling you had, then moved on from.” This was so much harder than she would have even guessed. “I mean, how can you blame me for thinking that way? I thought it was our backgrounds and our overall differences that led you to keep your distance.”

“I don’t understand.”

“You’re a successful businessman who comes from a prestigious and wealthy family. I’m a nobody who’s working odd jobs while trying to decide what I want to be when I grow up, with an estranged mother and a father who deserted me before I could walk.”

He pressed closer against her; the warmth of his skin radiated against hers. “Oh, Tessa. You made so many assumptions. My family may be prestigious and wealthy, but I’ve always felt like an outsider within my own home.”
