A Match Made In Maui

Written by Nina Singh

Chapter Twelve

She’d been pampered and primped for the last few hours. Rita had treated all her bridesmaids to everything from massages to manicures to facials. Tessa figured she should have been as loose as a bowl of jelly right about now. Yet, somehow, Tessa still felt tense and on edge. She knew whom to thank for that state of affairs. The whole time she’d spent with the other bridesmaids at their spa retreat, she hadn’t been able to get Jason, nor his kiss, out of her mind.

She wasn’t even going to bother going to her room like all the rest of the ladies. They were all ready to nap while she was as restless as a caged leopard.

She could use a walk and she had yet to indulge in the specialty shaved ice that Maui was known for. From her last visit to the island, Tessa remembered exactly which stand served the best of the delicacy though it was half a mile away. The air would do her good.

When she reached the spot, an all too familiar figure stood close to the front of the line. Jason spotted her before she could pretend she hadn’t seen him and walk away. The lopsided smile he sent her way had her heart fluttering.

“Are you following me?” she demanded when she reached his side, knowing fully well the question made absolutely no sense, seeing as she was the one who’d just arrived.

He narrowed his eyes and looked her up and down. “I’m clearly here first, sweetheart. Perhaps it’s you who is following me.” His grin told her he absolutely didn’t suspect any such thing. He was teasing her.

That settled it. Lady Fate had to be toying with her. Then again, this had been one of the stops she and Jason had frequented during that unforgettable week. She recalled one particular afternoon spent in bed that had left them particularly parched and in need of refreshment.

Stop it.

Judging by the look on his face, Tessa had to wonder if Jason knew exactly where her mind had drifted. She felt a rush of heat to her cheeks.

He stepped forward to order when his turn came up. “One orange cone and a grape cone for my lady here.”

Tessa’s gasp almost caught in her throat. “First of all, I’m not your lady,” she bit out through gritted teeth.

Jason shrugged. “That just came out. It never bothered you before.”

She was going to ignore that. “Secondly, I don’t like grape shaved ice anymore.” That was a lie. She’d been looking forward to that particular flavor the whole walk here.

“Fine,” he answered with a patient nod. “What flavor would you like?”

“The flavor is not the point!” Embarrassingly, Tessa realized she’d actually stomped her foot.

Jason quirked an eyebrow at her, as if he were dealing with a tantrum-prone toddler. “What exactly is your point?”

Before she could answer, the teenaged server returned and handed her the cone. Not that she had any kind of answer to give.
