A Match Made In Maui

Written by Nina Singh

Chapter Four

Those beautiful sapphire blue eyes narrowed on him, flooding with skepticism. Her hand tightened in his palm. “And why would you do that? Why would you try to find me? After all this time?”

Jason swallowed down the brick of apprehension forming in his throat. He had known she’d be resistant to listen at first. But he hadn’t realized just how much it was going to hurt to see that reaction up close.

She wanted nothing to do with him now. He couldn’t really blame her. He’d been a fool—a fool who’d messed up royally.

But as much as he wanted this, as much as he needed to present his case, he also needed to make one thing clear up front.

“First, I want you to know that I’ll leave right now if that’s what you want. I’ll catch the next flight out back to the mainland if my presence is making you uncomfortable or uneasy. That’s the last thing I want.”

She lifted a bare shoulder. “Hawaii is a US state. Last I checked, the US is a free country. You can stay or leave whenever you wish, Jason.”

Not exactly the answer he was looking for but it was better than what he might have received. He’d take it.

“You still haven’t answered my question,” she prompted. “Why would you want to seek me out after all this time?”

He tugged her by the hand ever so gently toward him and simultaneously took a step closer. They stood a mere foot apart. That distinctive perfume of hers that tempted his senses teased him now. How many times during that fateful week had he dipped his face into the crook of her neck to inhale that enticing smell of budding roses? How many times had he imagined doing so since?

Blessedly, Tessa made no move to back away. Maybe she wasn’t quite as resistant to him as he feared.

“There are some things that need to be straightened out between us, don’t you think?”

Her responding laugh held zero joy or humor. “You flew all the way out here because you wanted to chat? Is that it?”

He simply nodded. “You haven’t exactly answered my calls or emails.” Nor had she acknowledged the garden full of flower bouquets he’d sent both to her apartment and office.

“Those calls and messages came way too late.”

She was right. He wanted desperately to try and make up for it. “Then let me buy you a drink now. The evening is still young.”

Jason knew he wasn’t playing fair. He’d just uttered the exact words he’d first approached her with, the same words that had led to their mind-blowing affair. Her slight gasp and the way she began chewing the corner of her upper lip told him she hadn’t forgotten either.

Tessa sighed. “You’re still on your game, I see. Still full of charismatic charm.”

“Thanks, I guess?” he said, hoping to elicit some small smile out of her. It failed. She stared at him stone-faced before she spoke.

“You have a stunningly lousy sense of timing, Jason Robahi.”
