Santa's Plus-One Surprise

Written by Melissa Senate

Chapter Twenty Five

The last person on earth Drake had thought he’d seek advice from was Darlene Cartland. He didn’t tell the woman the whole story, just that he’d proposed to Felicity and she’d said no.

“So you told her you and Colt needed her, but did you ever tell her you love her?” Darlene asked.

Drake bolted up. “I do love her. I love her so much I can’t even believe it. I’m not sure I even realized it until I said it just now.”

Darlene Cartland smiled. “Then go tell her. And leave my little grandson with me tonight,” she added with a wink. “You and your fiancée can pick him up in the morning.”

He gave Darlene a hug, kissed Colt on his soft little head, then raced out. He had a marriage proposal to get right.

Her eyes red-rimmed from crying, Felicity almost ignored the doorbell, but it wasn’t the Walsh way. She trudged to the door and opened it.

Drake rushed in, swooped her up in his arms and spun her around. “I love you so much, Felicity Walsh. I’m madly in love with you. Having you by my side—as my wife and as Colt’s mother—would make me the happiest man alive.”

She gasped. “Santa told you what I wanted for Christmas?”

“Actually, it was Mrs. Cartland.”

She laughed. “I owe her one. And yes. I will marry you. And I’d be honored to be Colt’s mother. We’ll always preserve Gwenyth’s memory for him.”

Drake nodded. “We’re a family.”

She was so verklempt she couldn’t speak.

“Wow, you wanted a serious boyfriend to bring to the wedding and ended up with a fiancé,” he said. “Good work, Walsh.”

She grinned. “You know what? I think I’ll keep our engagement our little secret till after the wedding. I don’t need to be engaged to feel good about myself in the eyes of my family. I needed to be okay with myself. I finally get that now.”

“And I finally get what it means to love a woman with all my heart. You really did change me, Felicity.”

“We changed each other,” she said. “Just in time for Christmas.”

He kissed her, every Christmas wish she’d ever have coming true.
