Santa's Plus-One Surprise

Written by Melissa Senate

Chapter Sixteen

Stay here?” Felicity repeated. “As in live with you?”

“Well, for the next two days,” he said. “As backup.”

Drake didn’t want to admit—even to himself—that he was worried. That he’d mess up. That Colt would awaken for his next feeding and Drake would freeze. That he’d put on Colt’s diaper backward.

And that the Cartlands were right: a few hours with a baby was nothing. Whereas two full days would show him what life would really be like as a father solely responsible for a tiny life. And that he wouldn’t be able to handle it.

But so far, so good, right? When you wanted something, when it mattered, you made it happen. You made it work. And he wanted this. He wanted to be Colt’s daddy.

Something in his expression must have spoken for him because Felicity said, “Of course I’ll stay. I practically promised the Cartlands I would.”

“So, you don’t trust me, either?” he asked, arms crossed over his chest.

“Actually, I do trust you with Colt. You just have to take every situation as it comes and you’ll be fine.”

He sucked in a breath. “Sorry. I’m actually not sure I trust myself. Thanks for staying.”

She smiled and settled on the sofa, and everything inside him relaxed. Phew—she wasn’t leaving.

“How about I show my appreciation by making you my specialty for dinner,” he said.

She raised an eyebrow. “What is your specialty?”

“It’s a surprise.” His spaghetti Bolognese and garlic bread were pretty darn good.

She smiled. “Well, life is certainly a surprise, so dinner should be, too. Bring it on.”

He headed into the kitchen, then popped his head back out. “Oh, and if we hear Colt on the monitor, I’ll take care of it. I have to learn to juggle, so just stay put.”

“Will do,” she said.

He couldn’t help but notice the way her fuzzy pink sweater and dark jeans clung to her curves. He’d been aware of Felicity from the moment he’d seen her at the school. He liked her wavy dark hair and the way her hazel eyes assessed everything—she was smart and thoughtful and sexy.

And living with him for the next two days.

Everything in him stood at attention at the thought of her right there. But he knew he had to tread carefully with Felicity Walsh. She was off-limits for good reason. He couldn’t mess this up. He needed her—with the Cartlands and with Colt.

But resisting her wouldn’t be easy.
