Trick and Treat

Written by Cara Lockwood

Chapter Twenty One

Hunter stood in the foyer of Vance’s house, feeling uneasy. A party guest dressed as Ferris Bueller had let him in, and now he scanned the crowd for his Material Girl. He glanced at his watch and saw it was eleven forty. It had taken much longer than he had expected to flag down a cab, which seemed to be in as short a supply as payphones these days. He’d remembered the intersection from her drop-off address, thankfully, since his dead phone was of no help, now nothing more than a brick paperweight in his pocket. Suddenly he heard someone shout, “Maverick!”

He turned to see a man dressed as Axl Rose heading for him.

“You’re Maverick!” the man exclaimed, a little too excited to see him.

“Uh… Technically, the name’s Hunter.”

“Yes! Hunter! Lizzie has been looking for you.” Axl beamed at him, but Hunter still wasn’t sure what he was talking about. He didn’t know a Lizzie.

“Lizzie! You know, Material Girl!” Then it all made sense. Material Girl was looking for him? He felt hope rise in his chest. He wasn’t too late then. “Actually, we’ve been looking for you. I’m Vance, by the way, and what I want to know is, don’t you check your messages?”

“Phone’s dead.” Hunter shrugged. Vance grabbed his own phone from his pocket and showed Hunter the stream of messages he’d posted: Material Girl Needs Her Maverick… and another reading Desperately Seeking Maverick.

All this time Material Girl had been looking for him.

“Where is she now?” Hunter wasn’t about to let her slip through his fingers. Not again.
