Chapter One

For the past two years, Nora Garrett had kept herself so busy in Charisma, North Carolina, that she’d almost managed to forget that she’d come here to escape a broken heart. Until she opened the door of her apartment on a Saturday morning early in June and found herself staring into the face of the man who had trampled that fragile organ beneath the heel of his size-twelve cowboy boot.

Even after so much time, Devin Findlay looked exactly the same—the same dark curly hair that she knew was soft to the touch; the same strong jaw that was rough with stubble. The same deep blue eyes that managed to say so much of what he was thinking and feeling when his lips didn’t speak a word. Those broad shoulders, wide chest, strong arms. The hands that had moved over her body with masterful purpose and devastating skill.

She’d once loved him with her whole heart—but that was a long time ago.

“I must still be sleeping,” she said. “Because the only way you’re here is if this is a nightmare.”

“There was a time you used to have a different kind of dream about me,” he reminded her.

Not that she needed a reminder. Because not even seven hundred and thirty days and a thousand miles was enough time and distance to make her forget, though God knows she’d tried. She’d left Echo Ridge, Texas, in search of her biological father. At least that’s what she’d told everyone, because she didn’t want to admit that she’d been running away.

“I used to be naive and idealistic,” she responded to his comment, and moved to shut the door.

“Wait!” He stuck that size-twelve foot—yes, wearing a familiar cowboy boot—in the narrow gap. “I need your help.”

“You’re not getting anything from me—ever.”

“I know,” he acknowledged. “And I wouldn’t have come here for myself, but it’s my dad—”

“What about your dad?” she demanded.

Growing up, Nora had spent as much time at Western Hills Ranch as she had her own home. “Uncle” Allan Findlay had sat her on her first horse, taught her how to groom the gentle mare, to muck out her stall and care for her tack. Most important, he’d given attention to a little girl who desperately needed it, who didn’t understand why the man she’d always called Daddy had no time for her and even less affection.

“He was in a car accident—”

“When? Where?” she demanded. “How badly was he hurt?”

“If you’d let me complete a sentence, I might be able to tell you,” he drawled.

She felt her cheeks burn.

“And if you’d offer me a cup of coffee, I’d be grateful,” he said. “I drove straight through from Echo Ridge. I only stopped to fill my gas tank and grab a bite.”

Nora didn’t owe Devin anything.

On the other hand, she owed his father everything.

But as she stepped away from the door, her heart raced in a disturbingly familiar way that warned her she might be making a big mistake.
