Lost and Found Baby

Written by Hope White

Chapter Fifteen

“Where’s my mom!” Sara’s voice demanded.

Katy put out her hand for Ruby to stay back. Katy withdrew her firearm and headed down the hall. She paused beside the door to the gathering room.

“Your mom’s not here,” a woman said.

Peeking through the doorway, Katy watched Sara pace and wave something in her hand. A knife. She was definitely not thinking rationally at this point, which meant there was no way Katy would allow her anywhere near Isabella.

Katy placed the gun in the waistband of her jeans. She wasn’t going to discharge her weapon and risk hitting one of the ladies from the knitting group.

“Sara?” Katy stepped into the room with her hands up.

The young woman spun around and pointed the knife at Katy. “Where’s my mom?” Her eyes were bloodshot, her skin blotchy.

“I’m here, sweetheart,” her mom said. Katy put her hand out to keep Ruby behind her.

“You need to drop the weapon, Sara,” Katy said.

“I need money!” she shouted.

“Honey, where have you been?” Ruby asked.

“Get me money!”

“Put down the knife,” Katy said calmly.

“Here, Sara, you can have all my money.” Ruby went to get her purse. When she handed cash to Sara, the young woman grabbed her mom’s wrist and spun her around.

Sara held the knife against Ruby’s chest.

“Come on, Sara, you don’t want to do this,” Katy said. “Think about your baby.”

“Your baby?” Ruby said in a soft voice. “I thought the baby items were for a friend?”

“Don’t you dare judge me!”

“I’m not—”

“Shut up!” Sara interrupted her mom. She edged past the group, holding Ruby hostage.

“We can figure this out together,” Katy said, following them into the hall.

“You’re a cop. All you want to do is arrest me!”

“I want to help you.”

“Stay back!” Sara yanked her mom out of the building and the door slammed shut.

“Call 9-1-1!” Katy called to the women and went in pursuit.

She cautiously cracked open the door and spotted Sara pulling her mom toward Ruby’s car. The truck was still parked in the corner of the lot. Katy hoped Luke kept his distance and didn’t try to intervene.

“No, it’s all your fault!” Sara shouted at her mom, releasing her.

Ruby said something, but Katy couldn’t make it out.

“How could you do that to me?” Sara said. “He’s evil!”

Katy headed toward them. She had to stop this before someone got hurt.

“I’ll never forgive you! I hate you!” Sara shouted.

Ruby slapped her daughter

Sara lunged at her mother.

They both went down, hitting the pavement. Neither of them moved for a few seconds.

Ruby scrambled to her feet and looked down at her daughter. A dark stain spread across Sara’s shirt.
