Lost and Found Baby

Written by Hope White

Chapter Twelve

Luke stepped protectively in front of Katy. “Please put down the gun.”

He noted the young woman’s pale skin and the dark circles under her eyes.

“Sara?” Katy said, peering around Luke.

He put out a protective hand.

“It’s okay. Sara, is this your baby girl?”

Sara nodded, the gun trembling in her hand. If she fired, Luke would be dead within seconds.

“She’s beautiful,” Katy said, touching the baby’s cheek.

If he lunged at the young woman, she’d discharge the weapon. If he just stood here…

“She has green eyes, like you.” Katy smiled at Sara.

Luke realized she had her own method of disarming the young mother.

Sara glanced at Luke. “You were supposed to protect her.”

“Wait, I don’t—”

“That’s what he’s trying to do,” Katy interrupted. “It’s what we’re both trying to do. Will you help us?”

“I want to,” she said softly, then her eyes widened with fear. “But they’ll find me. They always find me.”

“Who?” Katy said.

Sara shook her head.

“You say you want her back,” Katy said. “How will you protect her all by yourself?”

“I don’t know,” she choke-sobbed.

“We can help,” Katy said. “Let’s not stand out here any longer than necessary.”

“You think they’re here?” Sara squeaked.

“Not yet,” Luke said. “We’ve been able to outsmart them so far.”

Sara lowered the weapon, eyeing Luke. “That’s what they said about you. That you’re smart and brave. That you’re a hero.”

Katy put her arm around Sara’s shoulder and nodded for Luke to take the gun. “He is smart and brave. Come on, let’s get out of here.”

Luke drove and the two women sat in back with the baby.

Isabella. The baby’s name was Isabella. Sara called her Izzy.

“How did you find us?” Katy said.

“I was taken to the safe house before.”

“By whom?”

“Deputy Cooper.”

“After you disappeared?”

“No, way before that.”

She shrugged, but didn’t answer.

“So you left baby Izzy at Luke’s house to protect her,” Katy said. “From whom?”

“I’m so stupid.” She broke down into tears. “I can’t believe I didn’t figure it out sooner, but I thought I was in love.”

“Shh, it’s okay,” Katy consoled.

“Have you ever been in love?”

“Yes. Loving someone can be complicated, that’s for sure.”

Luke caught her gaze in the rearview. Was Katy referring to her ex-husband or Luke?

Blue and white lights flashed through the back window.

“They’ve found us!” Sara cried.
