Lizzie felt flustered and overwhelmed. Her head spun: she’d had one of the best climaxes of her life and then she’d seen that Maverick might not be as free and clear of his ex as she’d first thought. She’d only seen I need you pop up on the screen. It didn’t sound like an ex, exactly. Of course the man she broke all her rules for wasn’t single. That made perfect sense, and was just her luck. But why was she making a big deal of it? Halloween wasn’t for serious romance. It was for…quickies in the back seat of a Ryde car. So, why did she feel so disappointed?
She felt the sudden urge to flee. She needed to get away, get into the safety of Vance and Tanner’s party.
“Wait!” Maverick called behind her. “Wait!”
She hesitated on the sidewalk just long enough to see a pained look on Maverick’s face as his phone came to life in his hands. Tamara calling, no doubt. He answered the call, and that was all Lizzie needed. He’s not interested in you, Lizzie told herself. Get a move on. She turned away from Maverick and trotted up to Vance and Tanner’s front door, resisting the urge to turn around.
