I grew up in a small town in Wisconsin and love to use the northwoods as the setting for the books I write. My parents owned a weekly newspaper for thirty years, so as a child, I spent a lot of time at the shop, plunking out stories on my mother's typewriter. The first 'book' I wrote was about a talking horse and I paid my older brother one whole dollar to publish it (he had the stapler!) I would spend hours at the local library in the summer and gradually read my way through the entire children's section. When I started looking at what was available on the other side of those little bookcases, the librarian steered me toward Grace Livingston Hill – and my love of romance was born!
Creative writing took a back seat to essays and term papers while I was in college. After my husband and I were married and began raising a family, an unexpected snow day from school rekindled my desire to write. During my son's afternoon nap, I wrote a short story and submitted it to Brio magazine, a publication our oldest daughter subscribed to. The editor called me a few days later (I thought she was inquiring about my subscription!) and told me they wanted to publish it. I went on to write over a dozen more short stories for the magazine but it was my secret dream to write a novel, too. Our youngest son started kindergarten and I remember teasing my husband that he probably expected me to get a full-time job. He suggested I stay home and write a book, because he knew that was what I really wanted to do. Without his support and encouragement, I wouldn't have had time to write a full-length novel. A few years later, my debut novel, Tested by Fire, was picked up by Love Inspired. I've been writing ever since! Inspirational fiction allows me to combine my faith with my love for a happy ending.
Sometimes when I read an author's bio, I have to admit that I'm a little envious of their experiences and interests. So even though I wish I could say that I love mountain climbing, white water rafting and skydiving... I'm afraid of heights, I don't know how to swim and I'm not that crazy about being up in plane, either! What I do love is spending time with my very own cop hero and our three amazing children, walking on the trails of our country home and sitting in the sun with a cup of coffee and a really good book.
