About Jason

I live in a very small town in southeastern North Carolina. I have a BFA in Fiction and an MFA in Poetry, both from the University of North Carolina. My poetry and fiction has appeared in various journals such as Prick of the Spindle, The Thomas Wolfe Review, The Kakalak Anthology of Carolina Poets, Measure and Chautauqua. In 2009, I was fortunate enough to be nominated for a Pushcart Prize award.

I am the author of two poetry collections: We Call This Thing Between Us Love and …hide behind me... The former, obviously, deals with the topic of love. The latter deals with superheroes and my father. The Returned is my first novel.

I started writing when I was about thirteen or fourteen, after I came across an excerpt from John Gardner’s Grendel. I grew up loving the story of Beowulf and didn’t really know writers were 'allowed' to take pre-existing stories and build on them. Once I found this out I began writing alternate versions of some of my favourite stories such as The Odyssey and The Illiad.

It should be known that when I’m not writing, I’m a motorsports and exotic car junkie. Most particularly, I’m a Formula 1 fanatic who is always cheering for McLaren! Apart from that, one of my guilty pleasures is watching really bad movies.
