About Julia

I’m Julia Justiss, a small town girl from Severna Park, Maryland, about an hour from Washington DC and close to the historic sailing town of Annapolis (which was briefly, after the American War for Independence, the capital of the US). While in high school, I worked as a guide for Historic Annapolis, which blended my love of history with the craft of storytelling.

I’d begun writing short stories and poetry in grade school, but I didn’t attempt a novel until I was living in Tunisia with my husband, where I was only able to work the occasional temporary job. Regency-set historical novels were always my favourites, so when I decided to try my hand at writing a book, this seemed like the right way to go. Although that first attempt will never see the light of day – my second full-length endeavour won the Romance Writers of American’s Golden Heart for an unpublished Regency manuscript and eventually became my first book, The Wedding Gamble.

Since then, I’ve completed more than seventeen novels, three novellas and several short serial reads. The Regency period remains my favourite, though I might eventually try other time periods (I’ve a World War II story I’d love to tell) all my published work so far is set in that era. For me, characters are the heart of a story. I usually begin with the idea of a hero and heroine in some particularly difficult circumstance and the novel develops from there.

What else about me? As you'll see on my Pinterest boards, I love animals and gardening and historical fashion. And I’ve always secretly wanted to drive the Grand Prix in Monte Carlo.
