I live in Adelaide, South Australia, a lovely city close to sandy beaches and the beautiful Mt Lofty Ranges. With its great climate and easy lifestyle I don’t intend to leave any time soon. Come on down and experience it for yourself!
I hold a Diploma of Teaching and a Bachelor of Education with a major in science and have taught young children for most of my life, but gave it up to write full-time a few years ago. On a personal note, I’d love to be able to tell I’ve watched the sun set at the top of the Empire State building, learnt to fly a plane, seen an aurora, been accepted for the first manned mission to Mars… but I've not quite made it that far yet. I love quilting, astronomy, all things Scottish and eating anything I don’t have to cook. I'm also passionate about animal welfare and the conservation of our planet.
I’d always been an avid reader of science fiction, romance and the paranormal, but back in the nineties I couldn’t find any books I enjoyed that combined these genres. So I began creating my own paranormal and time travel adventures in 1998. My first novel was a paranormal/reincarnation story. It was the book of my heart and is currently hibernating in a cupboard somewhere. My subsequent novels included a time travel trilogy and a contemporary romance involving a psychic hero. I entered my work in more than sixty contests here and overseas and although they did well, in the end they were declined by publishers. Wrong time, wrong work, wrong publisher?
A quote I’d heard kept me writing. ‘It’s often the last key in the bunch that opens the lock.’ I decided my work wasn’t hitting the market the way I wanted it to so I turned to writing contemporary romance and became hooked. Focusing more in depth on my characters’ journeys and their happy-ever-after was the most rewarding kind of writing I’d done. I continued entering contests because I believe the more you enter the more likely you are to get your work read by an editor. Which happened for me at the end of 2005 when Kim Young from Harlequin Mills and Boon bought my first novel for their Modern Heat series. Almost as exciting, my first two published novels won the Romance Writers of Australia’s Romantic Book of the Year Award for 2007 and 2008. I was a finalist for the Award again in 2012.
I still love creating my characters and sharing them with people all over the world. Especially when a reader writes to tell me my book helped her at a critical time in her life. I feel so privileged that my books can help others in some small way.
