I’ve been an avid reader since the moment I realised that words on paper made sense to me. I developed a lively imagination early on and loved making up stories to entertain my friends.
I tried a variety of jobs after leaving school, including dental nursing and a spell in the Women's Royal Air force. I emerged from that one knowing a whole lot more about life – if only as an observer.I married in 1960, but didn't think about trying my hand at writing for a living until I gave up work four years later to have a baby. I often read Harlequin Mills & Boon novels myself, and having done some market research in the local library asking readers what it was they particularly liked about the books, I decided to aim for a specific market. I was fortunate to have my very first completed manuscript accepted and The Last of the Mallorys was published in 1968.
Since then I have written over 70 books, which doesn't begin to compare with the output of some Harlequin Mills & Boon authors, but still leaves me wondering where all those words came from. I now live on the outskirts of Chesterfield in Derbyshire along with my husband, Tony, and a huge tabby cat called Mad Max – my one son having flown the coop. Someday maybe I’ll think about retiring, but not yet. I've still got too many stories to tell.
