About Debra

Having come from a long line of schoolteachers, I always planned to follow the family tradition – until I put pen to paper and wrote my first novel. Growing up in a rural farming community, I read everything I could get my hands on when I was younger and was always making up stories in my head, secretly wondering if I'd be able to write a book.

After graduating college, I enrolled in a writing course for children’s literature. It was the hardest thing I’d ever done and I loved it. Still, the children’s market wasn’t for me. I wanted to write what I loved to read: romance.

Equally inspired by Nancy Drew and fairy tales, I love to combine romance and suspense in both contemporary and historical novels. One of my favorite aspects of writing is the research. Whenever possible I like to get my information firsthand, which has led me to a shooting range, to observe brain surgery and I’ve even interviewed a notorious cop killer.

I enjoy animals, both domesticated and wild (except for snakes – no snakes please!) and I’m lucky enough to live on a wooded acreage that offers a frequent parade of deer, turkey, squirrels and rabbits, with the occasional appearance of a neighbour’s escaped cow.

People often ask why I write romance. It’s because I believe in heroes and heroines who, after fighting their way through often-formidable obstacles, are rewarded with a happy ending. When the story's over, their future is just beginning and I really like that idea.
