Santa's Plus-One Surprise

Written by Melissa Senate

Chapter Nineteen

An hour later, Felicity stood at the counter in Drake’s kitchen, cutting their turkey and provolone sandwiches. She’d been surprised to find Drake had a stocked fridge; he even had French bread and spicy brown mustard.

She brought their lunch into the living room just as Drake came in and sat on the sofa. “Colt asleep?”

“He makes it too easy,” Drake said. “Is he a good baby or I am not too shabby at fatherhood?”

Felicity laughed. “Both. He is an easy baby. But you’re great at fatherhood, Drake. Like I told you—it’s about love, commitment and showing up.”

“I had no idea,” he said, picking up half his sandwich, “that I could feel this way. That I could love so much. I feel like a different person.” He put the sandwich back down. “How is this possible?”

“That’s what love is. Love changes you. Someone else means everything. Someone else comes first. It’s big stuff.”

“And such a tiny little body, too,” he said with a grin. He seemed to feel better and picked up his sandwich, making quick work of the half. “Thanks for lunch.”

“My pleasure.” It had been, fixing lunch in the ranch kitchen while he put their baby down for a nap.

She froze.

Their baby.

Oh, God. She had to check herself. She had to be careful. Drake wasn’t hers. Colt wasn’t hers. This life for two and a half days wasn’t hers.

Drake’s cell phone rang and he glanced it at on the coffee table. “It’s Darlene Cartland.” He picked up the phone and had a short, polite conversation where he said everything was going great three times. “That’s the third time she’s called,” he said. “Two times last night.”

Felicity smiled. “She cares about that baby. That’s a good thing. She even texted me a little while ago to ask how things were going. I told her you were wonderful with Colt, and very responsible, and she could absolutely trust you.”

He reached for her hand and squeezed it. “I appreciate that. Darlene does seem to want this to work out. I feel for her. She lost her daughter and now she has to give up the baby she’s raised for the past three months. Since Colt was just a few weeks old.”

“Well, just show her what she needs to see, to believe. And then you’ll both have what you want. She loves Colt, so of course she wants him to grow up with his daddy.”

He looked at her, hard. “I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

She stared back at him and then, without thinking, she kissed him.

On the lips.

With feeling.
