A LADY WITH A SECRET SORROW
Reeling from heartbreak, Lady Laura Campion has transformed herself into the infamous Scandal’s Virgin of high society – flirtatious, alluring and utterly shocking – and yet she has always stopped short of absolute ruin. But now she has new hope. The daughter she thought lost is alive, and under the guardianship of the powerful Avery Falconer, Earl of Wykeham.
Going into battle against Lord Wykeham might be her only option to win little Alice back, but she doesn’t expect the irresistible attraction that simmers between her and the formidable Earl. Laura finally has a chance at happiness – but can she persuade Avery to forgive her past?

Enjoyable if you like the plot synopsis
A typically well written and plotted novel from Ms Allen with likable characters but from a personal perspective I just don't like it where the heroine has has child by the hero's brother.
If you're okay with this the you should find a worthwhile read - just not for me.
Six out of ten
Louise Allen is one of my favourites as her characters tend to emerge from the pages. You can't put most of her stories down because you become invested in the characters.
This story is a good one but it has bits that should have been added which I will cover later in this review but for now, the story.
The characters of Avery, Laura/Caroline and Alice are well written and very expressive in the story.
The story deals with several harsh aspects of that era. The bearing of a child out of wedlock. The mother's love. The father's demise. The cousin who thinks he is doing the best thing possible but ends up causing more heartache for the mother but in the end all comes about and the characters have a happy ending although I didn't get my happy ending again I will explain that in a minute.
The story has no real heavy plots. It deals with two very uncertain people both coming to terms with the loss of someone they cared for. Then six years on it all comes together in a real mess but it is helped by a godmother who can see beyond the who into the feelings Avery and Laura start to have for each other. In a fun visit to a house party they finially come together only to be thrown more together but still not trusting each other.
It was wonderful that in the end trust and love win out but the ending was neglecting so many details. Do they have a child in the end of their own? Does Alice accept everything she learns? Does Blackie come back? and do they travel as a family in their future? you see too many questions left open and that is an annoyance of mine that the story had no real clear ending.
