‘He had more the edge of an outlaw than a shining knight...’

Rachel Sutter’s world is turned upside down when Caleb Beckett rides into Salvation Falls. He brings news of a poker game gone disastrously wrong – not only has her wastrel husband been killed, he’s also gambled away Rachel’s home!

Suddenly Rachel is left with nothing but an unpaid debt, and Caleb is holding all the cards – not to mention the deed to her land! There’s something about the enigmatic drifter that she is instinctively drawn to, but how can she begin to trust him when so much of his past is shrouded in mystery?

A good start ....

Kelly Boyce is a new author to Mills and Boon and has made a good start with her debut novel. The story starts with a big upheaval for the family. Rachel Sutter is a hard working lady. Her husband is a bit of a gambler and looses the most precious thing to Rachel her land. The body of her husband is brought back by Caleb who is quiet but signs on as a ranch hand and really makes his mark. You have Rachel's brother Brody, who is her mother's son but not her father's. Both parents are dead and Rachel inherited from her father. They have a wonderful character in Freedom and Ethan is a normal tearaway. He joined the family when his mother died. There are several hands to help and they are well written in the story. Caleb is complex and has a big history but he soon discovers so does Rachel. The story is a little slow at the beginning but picks up a bit later on. The story has certainly some moments to it including a few bad guys. The ending was my only disappointment as I like my stories to have the ending wrapped up in a bow and completed. I would have liked to have read the wedding and perhaps a look back at them from say 10 years later finding that their life had settled and they all found a happy ending but the ending gave just a happy but unfulfilling ending in the fact that no wedding and no information on how they went on from then. Those key points would have seen the book as an excellent story and just rounded it all off instead I am left feeling a little lost at the end with no real completion to the book. It is worth reading and was a joy.
