About Pamela

Now that I think about it, my life would have made a pretty good Danielle Steel novel. (Except for the great clothes and the jewellery, of course.)

Picture it. A plucky girl from the working classes with nothing to recommend her but a good head on her shoulders, seeks to make a place for herself in the world. Secretly, she wants to be a writer, but she believes that dreams like that are for other people. She works, instead, within the quiet walls of the local library recommending the books that she wishes she’d written.
One day she chances upon a man like no one she’s ever known. Urbane and sophisticated and darkly handsome, he’s had a career as a diplomat and a businessman. He’s lived all over the world and for some strange stroke of destiny is now in her town. Inexplicably he falls madly in love with her, and she (me) with him.
They get married on her lunch break (seriously that actually happened) and happily create two beautiful children. They travel the world, seeing new things, living in new places, laughing every day.
She confesses her secret dream to write novels and he encourages her, helps her, pushes her to make that happen. And just as her dream is coming true, he becomes ill. Despite years of effort and the latest in medical science, he dies tragically young.
She is suddenly left with the care of two children and her only means of supporting them is to pursue her fledging writing career.
That working class pluckiness becomes the engine that stokes her ambition and girds her heart through grief and loss.
It all works out well in the end, of course. She is not only able to keep bread on the table writing the stories she wants to read, she finds a new man who brings a new love to her life. He is not urbane, sophisticated or darkly handsome, but he loves her to smithereens and as we walk hand-in-hand into the sunset, he asks, “Now, who is Danielle Steel?”

Calla stepped off the bus on Canasta Street and made a quick stop at the shops before walking the three blocks to her home. Typically this time of year she made the walk all bundled up and with her head down against the wind. But this fall was gorgeous in Chicago and the city was, for a brief time a...
