The story had some interesting aspects with a group of people thrown together by circumstances beyond their control.
The main characters develope well during the story. Hugo and Ruth are great characters. I found the fact that Ruth was not her first name quite interesting and it gave a fun aspect to Hugo's terms for her.
The story gives you some intrigue and some interesting quirks.
It has 2 deaths discussed within along with aspects of many character backgrounds being exposed in a gentle manner.
A wonderful story but I would have liked more of an ending especially to aspects that pop up in the story I wanted a more fully ending to answer all the questions.
An Ideal Hero
Beautifully written story with engaging heroine and believable hero. Such a joy to read a romance where one can truly admire the character values of a hero who would make a great husband. I was swooning with the kindness and the thoughtfulness of the hero - there was so much to enjoy in this novel - well worth the money and time spent reading it.
At a time when, for me personally at any rate, the Historical genre is going down a road I don't like, all hail Anne Ashley for this riveting story.
Using an unusual and intriguing plot of "who-dun-it" the author writes with great insight of the standards and customs of the era.
It is almost hard to believe such a masculine yet caring hero like Hugo could exist - and yet you can - while Ruth's seemingly quietly enigmatic and rather insipid exterior covers a charming, competent and strong personality.
I would perhaps have liked the romance to have a bit more tension but that's a minor quibble in what I consider one of the best Historicals for some time.
