I was born in South Africa and I grew up with three ambitions: to become a writer, to travel the world, and to be a game ranger. I didn't make the last one! But my fascination for wildlife and that special something about Africa and its big game is still with me. When I began working I went into the travel industry, first at an agency, then an airline, and this started me on the road to seeing the world.
I met Dave, my New Zealand-born husband who had been working in West Africa, when he was on his way home through Johannesburg. He did go home but in a matter of weeks he was back in South Africa, and six months later we were married. Three of our five children were born in South Africa, one in London and after we emigrated from South Africa, one in Australia.
It wasn't until that Australian-born son started school that I sat down at the kitchen table determined to stop dreaming about writing and do it! Now, seventy-odd books later, I’m still not happy unless I have a book under way, and I’ve discovered I can write through just about anything, the mountain of laundry five children can generate included. My kids still tease me that they never could find matching socks as they grew up.
Dave and I have moved around a lot. We've trained racehorses, farmed, and lived on our boat for six months while we sailed it from the Gold Coast to the Torres Strait and back. A few years ago we sailed a boat from Darwin to the Kimberley region of Western Australia, an amazing experience, so rugged, so remote, so beautiful. We currently live in Queensland, overlooking the water. We both love to travel. The highlight of one of our trips back to Africa was a visit to the Serengeti, in Tanzania, where I did the one thing I swore I would never do: take a ride in a hot-air balloon. I was a nervous wreck as the balloon tottered upright, but will always remember it as a breathtaking, unique experience to see the game, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, impala, spreading out on the Serengeti plain beneath me as the sun rose.
Although I have a passion for wildlife and Africa, I love Australia and now consider it my home.
