About India

I decided I wanted to write romance for Mills & Boon at the age of thirteen. I’d been devouring my stepmother’s stash of books for some time, when I reached the tragic conclusion that real life was never going to match up to the excitement and glamour I’d discovered between their covers. The only thing I could imagine that would be more fun than reading, would be thinking up the stories for myself. I was completely misguided about many things when I was a teenager (like the marriage potential of George Michael, and the importance of having slim thighs to one’s chance of future happiness) but on that point I was dead right!

It took a while for me to get round to doing it, though. I went to university, got a degree in English Language and Literature, met the man of my dreams and had three daughters. I changed nappies, grilled fish fingers, constructed nativity play costumes and wrote shopping lists. And then I had the very good fortune to meet the legendary Penny Jordan who encouraged me to resurrect my dreams and write something more. I sold my first book to Mills & Boon Modern/Presents in September 2006.

I live in a small market town in the north west of England, in dairy farming country (though our livestock includes only a single cat and rabbit these days, and no cows at all). I write full time in a room at the top of the house, which is cold in winter and hot in summer, and packed to the rafters with books. I love tea and history and vintage stuff (or ‘junk’ as my husband likes to call it) and evenings on the sofa in my pyjamas.

Favourite films

The 1968 Franco Zeffirelli version of Romeo and Juliet and Nino Rota’s delicious musical score.
