At last, I’ve found my dream job and feel very privileged to be one of Harlequin Mills and Boon’s historical authors. Maybe, like me, you discovered Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer as a teenager? Or perhaps the joys of those and other wonderful writers of Regency romance are a more recent pleasure for you? It certainly feels an enormous privilege for me to write Regency set novels and I can still hardly believe I’ve been invited to the ball.
While I love reading and English was always my favourite lesson at school, it wasn’t until I took a creative writing module as part of my degree that a hope I might be able to write a book began to take over my life. It took a lot of learning and years of failure and persistence, but, at last, I’m happily pounding away at my keyboard.
Creating characters who surprise me with unexpected twists and turns in the plot is so exciting it makes the frantic rush to meet deadlines, or the frustration of days when nothing happens at that keyboard, except too much coffee and cake, feel worthwhile. So that’s probably why a finished book is often very different from the one I started to write.
At various times in my life I have helped run the family garden centre, taught students even more reluctant than I was, worked as an office administrator and helped look after my elderly parents. I now write most of the time but work in the catering department of my local National Trust property as well, and value the chance to be involved with a wonderful house in a Capability Brown landscape, similar to ones my lords and ladies would have wandered in its heyday.
So I hope you will join me in the diverse and fascinating British Regency period and meet handsome heroes and feisty and alluring heroines as they argue and live and learn to love each other, during a time of stylish elegance and huge challenges. Without your company, dear readers, those heroes and heroines circle their dance-floors and fight their duels alone, so please accept my invitation to witness their love stories and make their circle complete.
