I was born in Los Angeles, and grew up in both LA and the San Francisco bay area.
At the age of twenty, after many years as a straight-A student, I dropped out of my Seventh-day Adventist pre-medical school programme and began writing. I sampled day-jobs as a horse trainer, magazine editor, telemarketer, bookstore clerk and the girl singer of a gospel band before I left California to complete an MFA in writing at the University of Massachusetts. Since then, my work has appeared in many magazines and literary journals, including The Bellingham Review, Alligator Juniper, The Massachusetts Review, The American, Calliope and Chautauqua Literary Journal. My short fiction has earned a Tobias Wolff Fiction Award and a Massachusetts Cultural Council Artists’ grant.
I have been teaching writing and literature for over a decade and I am the founder and director of Writers in Progress, a community literary arts centre housed in the Arts & Industry building (a refurbished old brush factory) in Florence, MA. I live and write in Florence with my husband, two young daughters, two cats and a very pampered Australian Shepherd.
